The NASCAR community came out in full force to support Kyle Busch’s family during Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte.
Kyle Busch’s family was in attendance at the Coca-Cola 600 where the NASCAR legend was scheduled to race on Sunday. Following his death on Thursday at 41, the focus of the race was on Busch’s life and legacy, and on the family he left behind.
Samantha Busch, Kyle’s wife of nearly 16 years, appeared at Sunday’s race with their children, Brexton (11) and Lennix (4). Kyle’s parents, Tom and Gaye Busch, and his brother, NASCAR Hall of Famer Kurt Busch, were also there as the community paid tribute.
“This was Kyle Busch’s home. Every racetrack was Kyle Busch’s home,” NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell told the crowd. “He competed like he had something to prove every single race, when in reality he had already proven everything. What I think we’ll miss the most isn’t the wins. It’s the guy who quietly wanted to help a teammate, give some advice, who was the husband, the father, the guy who quietly did things for others when no one was watching.”
O’Donnell then spoke to the Busch family, saying, “Samantha, I want you to know that this sport stands with you, and that you and your children are NASCAR family forever. Brexton and Lennix, your dad loves you with all his heart. Everyone gathered here, everyone behind you, everyone watching on TV, and all those people up in that grandstand, they are your family, and we’ve got you.”
The crowd erupted in applause in support of the Busch family. Samantha Busch embraced her son as she wept.
O’Donnell concluded, “Kyle Busch is NASCAR. He was one-of-a-kind, and there will never be another.” He then led the packed speedway in a moment of silence in Kyle Busch’s honor.
