Marshals Marks The Next Chapter For Kayce Dutton
Since its premiere earlier this spring, fans have been loving the newest Yellowstone spin-off centered solely on Kayce Dutton. Marshals follows John Dutton’s son as he takes a decisive turn in his life, joining an elite team of U.S. Marshals.
A major bombshell was revealed immediately – as Kayce’s beloved wife, Monica, has tragically died from cancer. The episode later reveals that the illness may have been related to toxins dumped by a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation. We learn that this loss has deeply affected Kayce in a profound way as he admits to how her death has gravely impacted his life.
He agrees to join the Marshals team, giving him a renewed sense of purpose. Kayce later visits Monica’s memorial, promising his late wife that he will begin to try again.
The first few episodes were such a success, the show is already in production for its second season!

Riley Green Makes His Acting Debut
Actor Luke Grimes returned to the role as Kayce as well as Broken Rock chairman Thomas Rainwater (played by Gil Birmingham). The spin-off also welcomed a new cast-member, Logan Marshall-Green, who will play Pete “Cal” Calvin, a close friend from Kayce’s military past.
Country fans tuned in to watch mid-season as country singer Riley Green made his big acting debut! Riley played a troubled cowboy named Garrett.
It was Riley’s first acting role, and was a pretty big one to land without prior experience. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet of the show’s premiere, the singer shared that he was introduced to the opportunity by Luke.
The two are friends in real life and have even worked together before, since Luke is also a country singer. When Riley mentioned his interest in acting, Luke helped connect him with an audition, and from there, everything moved fast.
Garrett was tragically killed off the show just a few episodes later, but Riley said he thouroughly enjoyed his time on set.
Marshals Season 1 Comes To An End
On Sunday (May 24), the first season of Marshals came to an end. The finale delivered several shocking twists while setting up an even bigger battle ahead for Kayce.
In the episode, titled “Wolves at the Door,” Kayce appears to still be considering selling East Camp to Tom Weaver (played by Chris Mulkey). Tom arrives with Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) and his ranch foreman, Jeb (Kevin McNamara).
He reflects on the destruction surrounding him, saying that even after a fire, new grass eventually grows back in the spring. Kayce admitted he’s grown used to losing the people and things he loves, but East Camp is something he still has left to fight for.
We learn that Kayce ultimately decided not to sell East Camp after all. Instead, he chose to honor his late friend Garrett by turning part of the property into an equine therapy center for veterans.

Who Attempted To Assassinate Thomas Rainwater?
The episode also revealed new details surrounding the attempted assassination of Thomas Rainwater. Much of the suspicion in the finale centered on ranch owner Tom Weaver.
The episode strongly implied Weaver may have orchestrated many of the season’s violent events after his foreman, Jeb, was shown leaving a murder scene before later telling Weaver the situation had been “handled.”
Before the investigation could be solved, East Camp came under attack from a heavily armed group of experienced gunmen. As the attackers closed in, prepared to defend the ranch while guarded the entrance. Upstairs, and Tate armed themselves as the danger escalated.
Kayce attempted to stop the gunmen on his own but was quickly overwhelmed. Although Mo managed to kill one of the intruders inside the house, another attacker still made it upstairs to Rainwater’s room. Just as Rainwater appeared moments away from death, Tate fired his weapon and killed the gunman himself.
Meanwhile, Kayce’s team abandoned their surveillance operation and rushed back to East Camp to help defend the property. Even suspended Marshal Miles joined the fight.
Following the attack, investigators discovered the shooters were international mercenaries, pointing to a far more powerful figure behind the assault, possibly the same person connected to the earlier mine bombing.
Authorities initially believed Councilman Irons orchestrated the attack after he was found dead in what appeared to be a suicide. However, the autopsy challenged that conclusion, revealing the case was far from over and setting up a major mystery heading into Season 2.

Season 1 Ends On A Major Cliffhanger
After surviving the violent attack on East Camp, Tate reassured that he was emotionally okay despite being forced to kill again. Tate admitted he was happy staying at East Camp alongside the family they’ve built together.
Elsewhere, Cal officially reinstated Miles to desk duty, a move that encouraged Maddie to give their relationship another chance. At the same time, Belle revealed she owed $20,000 in gambling debt to a casino. After her husband refused to support her, Belle crossed personal and professional lines by accompanying Cal to an oncology appointment in Salt Lake City.
In the final minutes of the episode, the Weaver family returned to East Camp to check on the Duttons following the assault. Tom Weaver invited Tate on a bass fishing trip to Texas, while Dolly stayed behind and becomes a potential love interest for Kayce.
The finale’s biggest cliffhanger came when Belle and Cal followed a lead connected to an East Camp ranch hand. When they arrived, they discovered the man dead. Moments later, they spotted the Weavers’ ranch foreman, Jeb, speeding away from the scene.
As soon as Jeb moved his SUV, two hidden gunmen opened fire on Belle and Cal, ending the season on a dramatic cliffhanger.
Stay tuned for details regarding Season 2!
