On July 9th, Bonnie Tyler’s family and team shared the heartbreaking news that the legendary singer had passed away the previous evening. A statement posted to Tyler’s official social media pages read:
“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in [the] hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.”
As the statement mentioned, 75-year-old Tyler had been hospitalized and was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. In May, she underwent emergency intestinal surgery and was placed into a medically induced coma while she recovered.
She came out of the coma in June, but her family said she was still “very unwell.”

Following Tyler’s death, fans have been digging deeper into her musical catalog. As a result, some of her lesser-known songs have been receiving renewed attention.
When most people think of Tyler’s music, the first songs that come to mind are pop/rock hits such as “Holding Out for a Hero,” “It’s a Heartache,” and of course, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” But did you know that Tyler sang country music, too?
In 2013, Tyler released a country-inspired album titled Rocks and Honey. Most of the songs were recorded in Tennessee, including the one and only duet on the album, “What You Need from Me.”
After hearing the demo for “What You Need from Me,” Tyler felt it would sound better as a duet. She got in touch with Vince Gill and asked if he wanted to sing it with her, to which he replied, “Yes.”
The contrast between Gill and Tyler’s voices on their duet actually inspired the album’s title. A friend of Tyler’s said their voices sounded like a combination of rocks and honey, and thus the album’s name was born.

Bonnie Tyler’s Country Album Also Features A Carrie Underwood Cover
One of the other standout tracks on Bonnie Tyler’s Rocks and Honey is a Carrie Underwood cover. Track #7 is a song titled “Flat on the Floor,” which was written by Ashley Monroe and Brett James (who died in a plane crash in 2025).
Underwood recorded “Flat on the Floor” for her 2007 studio album, Carnival Ride. She made the song the opening track of the album, which also featured hits such as “Last Name,” “All-American Girl,” and “So Small.”
But even Underwood wasn’t the first artist to sing “Flat on the Floor.” Country singer Katrina Elam (the star of Pure Country 2: The Gift) released the original recording earlier in 2007, and her version peaked at #52 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
Underwood never shared “Flat on the Floor” as a single, nor did Tyler. You can listen to their renditions and Elam’s in the clips below. Whose do you like most?
