Worsham’s connection to country music began long before he moved to Music City.
The Mississippi native developed his musical abilities at a remarkably young age. By the time he was just 12 years old, he had already won a junior national banjo championship and had performed on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
Over the years, he built a reputation not only as a solo artist but also as one of Nashville’s highly respected musicians, songwriters and collaborators.
His career has included work with major country stars including Kenny Chesney, Luke Combs and Dierks Bentley. He was also named CMA Musician of the Year and CMA Touring Musician of the Year in 2024, while earning two ACM Acoustic Guitar Player of the Year honors.
Vince Gill Delivered The Surprise
The emotional moment happened Friday night, August 7, during Vince Gill’s residency at the Ryman Auditorium.
Gill took the stage and surprised Worsham with the invitation to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.
The timing made the moment even more special. It happened exactly 20 years to the day since Worsham moved to Nashville.
Gill told Worsham that he was “beyond thrilled” to help him fulfill a dream and made it clear that he believed Worsham had earned the honor.
Worsham appeared stunned by the announcement, shaking his head in disbelief before embracing Gill in an emotional hug.
A New Chapter For Charlie Worsham
The Opry invitation comes at an important point in Worsham’s career.
He has just released his new album, Once Upon A Second Time Around, marking his first full-length project as an independent artist.
The album arrived August 7 through a partnership with independent music company ONErpm, following his years with Warner Music Nashville.
Worsham has already given fans a preview of the project with “Wrap My Porch Around,” a song that reflects his continuing connection to his bluegrass roots.

For Worsham, the Grand Ole Opry has been part of his story since childhood.
He first performed on the legendary stage as a young musician, and two decades after moving to Nashville, he is now being invited to join the institution that helped define the career he spent his life building.
