Mass Shooting Kills 2, Injures 9 At Brown University
Two people were killed and nine others critically injured in a mass shooting Saturday (December 13) at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
The university reported that an active shooter was identified shortly after 4:30 p.m. local time in the area of the Barus and Holley Engineering Building along Hope Street.
The FBI’s Boston office announced it had deployed resources to support Rhode Island law enforcement, including investigative, tactical, and victim assistance teams.
Authorities announced that a person of interest was taken into custody early Sunday (December 14), but later released that night.
“Shortly we will be releasing the person of interest who had been detained earlier today,” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said at the time.
Police later released surveillance video showing a man dressed in all black that they believe could be the possible suspect. Officials are asking the public for assistance if anyone recognizes the man below.

Remembering The Two Lives Lost In The Horrific Shooting
The two victims tragically killed in the shooting have been identified as Brown students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov.
Ella’s name was announced during a church service at the Cathedral Church of the Advent that she attended in Birmingham, Alabama.
The church’s Reverend Craig Smalley described Ella as a “bright light.”
“Tragically, one of our parishioners, Ella Cook, was one of those who was killed yesterday,” Smalley said. “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light. Not only growing up here in the ways… she encouraged and lifted up those around her, but at Brown University. She was an incredible light [there] as well.”
United States Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Jonathan Henick, posted a message on the official website of the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent, extending sympathy to Mukhammad’s family.
“I am deeply saddened by reports of the tragic death of Brown University student Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov on December 13. We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Umurzokov’s family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future,” he said.
Virginia State Senator Ghazala Hashmi noted that Mukhammad was a freshman at Brown and graduated just a few months ago from Midlothian High School in Chesterfield, Virginia.
“Such a profound tragedy for his family and our broader Midlothian community,” Hashmi wrote. “I keep his family and all who loved this young man in my thoughts and in my prayers.”
