A man who broke into Toby Keith’s Oklahoma estate just four months after the country music legend died has had his burglary conviction upheld after making an unusual claim about why he entered the property.
Anthony Borges was convicted of second-degree burglary after entering Toby Keith’s Dream Walkin’ Farm in Norman, Oklahoma, in June 2024. His conviction was recently upheld after his legal team challenged the case.
What Happened At Toby Keith’s Estate?
The incident happened in June 2024, just four months after Toby Keith died.
According to court records, Borges went to the entrance of the property but was turned away by Toby Keith’s daughter. Rather than leaving the area, he remained on the property and eventually made his way toward the pool.
He then entered an unlocked cabana and began looking through drawers and cabinets. The cabana also contained memorabilia connected to the country star.
While inside, Borges discovered a mini refrigerator and took three cans of Bud Light. Before leaving the cabana, he returned and took another can.
Police were called to the property, and Borges was later found in the garage drinking the beer and looking into vehicles that were stored there.
He Made A Bizarre Claim After His Arrest
The case took an unusual turn when Borges explained to a deputy why he had come to the property.
According to the report, Borges told the deputy that “the Lord had told him to come work for Toby Keith.”
The unusual explanation became part of the case, but it did not prevent prosecutors from pursuing a burglary conviction.
Toby Keith Estate Burglar Was Convicted
In April 2025, Borges was found guilty of second-degree burglary.
At the time, he was 35 years old and was recommended a two-year prison sentence.
His attorneys later challenged the conviction, arguing that prosecutors had failed to establish that Borges entered the property with the intention of stealing.
According to the appeal, Borges was a fan of Toby Keith and had allegedly entered the property because he wanted to explore it rather than specifically intending to steal anything. His legal team described his alleged motivation as wanting to “poke around the property for the sake of novelty.”
His Appeal Was Denied
The legal challenge ultimately failed.
Borges was released from Department of Corrections custody on June 1, 2026. The reason for his early release was unclear, according to the report.
He was later taken into custody in connection with misdemeanor charges dating back to 2022, including allegations involving grand larceny, unlawful entry, and criminal trespass.
Court records also show that Borges had previously been convicted of drug trafficking in Oklahoma County and had received a 10-year suspended sentence.
On July 9, 2026, the court upheld his original burglary conviction and denied his appeal.
His suspended sentence is now scheduled to run through August 18, 2031.
The Incident Came Just Months After Toby Keith’s Death
The timing of the break-in made the incident particularly notable.
Toby Keith died in February 2024 after a battle with stomach cancer. Only four months later, his Oklahoma property became the scene of the unusual burglary involving Borges.
Dream Walkin’ Farm was closely associated with Keith and his family, making the intrusion especially significant given how recently the country star had died.
The case has now reached another conclusion with the court’s decision to uphold Borges’ conviction.
