Mother And Daughter Found Dead After Suspected Grizzly Bear Attack In Canada
A mother and her 20-year-old daughter have been found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack near Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada. The tragic discovery has shocked the local community as authorities continue searching for the bear or bears believed to be responsible.
The victims were identified as 48-year-old Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed, 20. Their family reported them missing after they failed to return from a walk on October 31.
Mother And Daughter Disappeared During A Walk
Jennifer and Selah were last known to be in the Snooka West Trail area near Bella Coola.
According to reports, the two were familiar with the area. Jennifer’s brother described their outing as a casual walk.
The family reported them missing on November 1. Search teams later made two heartbreaking discoveries.
Jennifer’s remains were found on November 2. Selah was found the following afternoon, November 3, during a search involving the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and British Columbia conservation officers.
Authorities believe the deaths were caused by a grizzly bear attack. However, investigators have not confirmed whether one bear or multiple bears were involved.
Authorities Continue Searching For The Bear
The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service is continuing efforts to locate the animal or animals believed to have been involved.
Inspector Jeff Tyre said officers are carrying out dangerous work in the area. Authorities have warned residents, hikers, and visitors to stay away from the Snooka West Trail while the investigation continues.
Officials also said that any bears captured will be assessed. Animals confirmed to have been involved in the fatal attack will be dealt with under provincial safety guidelines.
A Community Remembering Two Lives Lost
The deaths have left family members and the Bella Coola community devastated.
Jennifer had recently moved to the area to begin a new chapter in her life and start a new career. She leaves behind three adult children and a grandchild.
Selah was only 20 years old and had her whole life ahead of her.
A fundraiser has been organized by relatives to help the family cover funeral expenses and other unexpected costs.
The tragedy has also brought back painful memories of another grizzly bear attack in the same region in November 2025. That incident left 11 people injured, including schoolchildren and teachers.
Authorities are asking the public to avoid the affected trail area as search and safety operations continue.
