UPDATE: A sergeant with the San Jose Police Department was hospitalized after being wounded during a violent, multi-county pursuit that ended in downtown San Jose, California, officials said.

Despite the severity of the injury, the sergeant was sent home from the hospital only one day after being shot. The veteran officer suffered a skull fracture but is expected to make a full recovery.

The shooting reportedly stemmed from a series of events that began with an armed carjacking and escalated into a high-speed chase spanning multiple jurisdictions. Authorities said the suspect exchanged gunfire with officers during the pursuit before crashing in downtown San Jose. The suspect was killed at the scene.

San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph praised his team of officers for their bravery, saying that “coming this close to losing an officer is a nightmare.”

Joseph praised the sergeant’s actions during the incident, calling him an experienced and dedicated member of the department. City officials also expressed support for the officer and his family as the investigation into the shooting continues.
