What happened to Nancy Guthrie?
Nancy Guthrie, mother of TODAY host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing on Sunday, February 1st. The 84-year-old did not attend church that day, prompting a friend to become concerned and contact one of Nancy’s children.
When that family member arrived to find her home in Phoenix, Arizona, empty, they called 911. Nancy has brown hair and blue eyes, and although she is mentally sound, she may have some physical limitations, consistent with her age, that would prevent her from walking far.
On the afternoon of February 2nd, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos shared an update in a press conference. He confirmed that Guthrie’s home was being considered an active crime scene, as the circumstances suggested that “Nancy did not leave on her own.”
The following morning (Feb 3), sources from local law enforcement told the LA Times that blood was found at the home as well as signs of forced entry. Nancy’s cellphone, wallet, car, and medication were all found on site.
Savannah Guthrie Pleads For Help
News anchor Savannah Guthrie shared an emotional plea online as the search for her mother remained unsuccessful. While on hiatus from the TODAY Show, she shared a statement via the program:
“Oh behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at: 520-351-4900.”
Later, Savannah urged her fans online to “please pray” and wrote:
“we believe in prayer. we believe in voices raised in unison, in love, in hope. we believe in goodness. we believe in humanity. above all, we believe in Him… thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy, a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant. raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment.”
On Tuesday (Feb 3), Donald Trump confirmed that he had been briefed on the Guthrie case. He told reporters in the Oval Office of his plans to personally call Savannah Guthrie, adding that the situation is a “terrible thing.” The President commented that he always “got along very good with Savannah.”
A White House representative confirmed to Fox News that the call occurred today, February 4th. Additional details of the conversation were not shared. Guthrie had been critical of President Trump in the past, notably clashing with the politician during a town hall event in the 2020 election cycle.
