Oklahome Senator Proposes Legislation In Honor Of Toby Keith

The state of Oklahoma is proud to call the late Toby Keith one of their own.

Oklahoma State Senator Lisa Standridge (R-Norman) filed legislation recently intended to honor the life and legacy of the native. The country singer died in February 2024 following a battle with stomach cancer.

Marshals’ Actor Mo Brings Plenty Says His Nephew Was Murdered, Police Disagree

Keith passed away on February 5, 2024 at just 62 years old. He first shared his diagnosis in 2021 and took a hiatus from performing to prioritize treatment and cherished moments with his loved ones.

Born and raised in Oklahoma, the “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” singer frequently referenced the state in his music and public life.

Shortly after his death, Keith even received an honorary degree, accepted by his daughter Krystal, from the University of Oklahoma. While Keith did not personally attend OU as a student, he was a lifelong fan and supporter of the university.

Keith remains one of the most influential country music legends of all time.

Senate Bill 1475 Would Honor Keith’s Life

Introduced as Senate Bill 1475, the legislation would be designed to officially recognize Keith’s life and contributions by renaming several pieces of transportation infrastructure in his home area.

The bill would rename a popular bridge in the area as “Toby Keith Memorial Bridge,” and require the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to place permanent markers in the surroundings.

In a press release, Senator Standridge shared that beyond his superstar status, Keith will always be remembered for his love and devotion to the United States.

“Toby Keith remains the greatest country and western star Oklahoma has ever produced, without question,” Standridge said. “Beyond being a mega-superstar entertainer, Toby was a proud patriot who consistently supported our nation and its military, both in person and through his music. Toby is dearly missed, but his music and his impact on Oklahoma, the nation and the world will live on for generations.”

Another stretch of road would take on the name “Toby Keith Parkway,” and another bridge called “Should’ve Been a Cowboy Bridge,” should the legislation pass.

“Senator Standridge also seeks to establish a method for private citizens, including members of Keith’s family, to contribute to the creation of artwork on any new bridge or interchange on a new spur or highway going across at Indian Hills Road and I-35,” the press release states.

Standridge continued, explaining the Keith family “would have the ability to commission artwork to honor the legendary country singer.”

While SB1475 will allow the family to take full control of the art, the Senator would envision Keith in his hat with a guitar, framed in an American flag.

Senator Lisa Standridge has introduced legislation to recognize the life and extraordinary achievements of country music superstar Toby Keith by naming a local bridge and future roadway developments in his honor.
