Many things have improved for Jelly Roll since starting his health journey, including his ability to see color again.
On Wednesday, December 10, Jelly Roll appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. During the conversation, he opened up about the struggles he faced that ultimately pushed him to focus on losing weight and becoming a healthier version of himself.
Over the past few years, the “Save Me” singer has shared his journey so fans could follow along with his transformation.
Since starting in late 2022, he has lost over 200 pounds naturally by sticking to regular exercise and completely changing his diet.
Throughout his life, the 41-year-old says his diet was “all sugar” and “processed foods.” It caused a lot of health problems, including one he never expected.
Jelly Roll says he was color blind for 20 years before he was able to see color again after switching to a healthier lifestyle.
“Joe, I was color blind,” Jelly Roll admitted. “This is a true story. My wife will tell you. She jokes about it now, but I’ve seen shades of colors, like general concepts, but like hunter green, emerald green…green [is] green, to me.
He continued, “I never realized there was nuances and prettiness and that some are brighter in tone. I just [saw] shades.”
Jelly Roll shared that not being able to see color the right way is a big reason why he wore all black for so many years. But a few months after cutting out sugar, he said he was walking around his house and started to notice that things looked different.
“I’d say nine months into no-sugar, I forgot what it was, but it was a plant at our house, and I come outside, and I grab my wife, and I go, ‘Dude, how long we’ve had that pretty purple tulip there?’ … She goes, ‘What?’ I was like, ‘That is the prettiest purple plant I’ve ever seen.’ … She was like, ‘You’ve walked by that plant for two years, what are you talking about?’”
“I didn’t notice it for two years,” he continued. “It was bright purple, Joe, I mean, it was screaming holy robe purple. Slowly, I started looking around the next few days, and over the next months, I was like, ‘I’m seeing clear color!’”
Being able to see color clearly again was a huge moment for Jelly Roll, especially since he never thought it could be changed. He was so excited that it even sparked a new hobby. He began to buy coloring books and color in his free time.
“I couldn’t quit talking about it. I bought coloring books,” he added. “My wife was laughing. This b**** used to give me a tie to match to go to court, and I’m in there coloring. She was like, ‘What are you doing?’ I was like, ‘You want to color?’… I’ve got like a 300 coloring pencil set.”
In fact, there are many things the singer has talked about being able to do now that he’s lost the weight.
He has ridden a scooter for the first time in more than a decade, completed his first 5k, and even joked that he can finally fit into designer clothes.
