Dolly Parton’s Niece Reveals Why Her Cancer Battle Was Kept Private: “She Never Wanted to Worry Anybody”
The family of Dolly Parton is opening up about the country music legend’s final days and the private health battle she faced before her death.
Jada Star, Dolly’s niece and the daughter of her younger sister Freida Parton, spoke about the loss of her aunt and explained why the family chose to keep Dolly’s health struggles away from the public.
Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, following a brief battle with cancer. Her death came as a shock to fans around the world, who had known only that she had been dealing with health issues over the past year.
Dolly Parton Did Not Want Fans to Worry
Speaking to Extra, Jada Star said the family had deliberately kept Dolly’s health problems private.
According to Jada, Dolly never wanted people to worry about her.
“We kind of kept all that stuff real private. And so she never wanted to worry anybody, so I think it was just a shock on Tuesday,” Jada said.
The singer’s death was especially difficult for her family because, despite knowing that Dolly was dealing with serious health problems, they were not prepared to lose her.
Jada described the experience as “really difficult and very surreal.”
She also said the family has been deeply touched by the enormous number of tributes that have followed Dolly’s death.
“It’s also been really bittersweet because of this beautiful opportunity we’ve had to see how much the whole world loves her,” Jada said.
“All of these tributes have helped so much to help us all through it.”
Dolly Parton’s Family Is Still Grieving
Jada also remembered the way Dolly approached life and the advice she gave to her family.
She said Dolly would have wanted her loved ones to continue living, working and loving one another despite their grief.
“She would also tell us to start drying it up, and start trying to get back to work, and love each other real hard,” Jada recalled.
The emotional memories show another side of Dolly Parton beyond her legendary career.
For her family, she was not simply a country music superstar. She was an aunt, sister and loved one whose presence had been part of their lives for decades.

Following Dolly’s death, Jada also joined a tribute to her aunt at the Grand Ole Opry.

She said she hoped Dolly would have been proud of her.
Jada also remembered one of the pieces of advice Dolly frequently gave her: not to worry about what other people think.
“Why are you worried about what other people think?” Dolly would tell her.
Jada said she carried those words with her when she performed in honor of her aunt.

When asked what she would say if she had one final opportunity to speak with Dolly, Jada became emotional.
Her answer was simple.
“I think I would just say, thank you so much, and I love you so much, and I know you’re okay.”
