The Former Prince Was Arrested For His Alleged Conduct In Connection With Jeffrey Epstein
Last October, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor announced he would no longer be using his title of “prince,” with Buckingham Palace formally stripping him of his honorifics, including Duke of York, later that month.
This was done as the former prince’s connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein continued to put pressure on the Royal Family.
As the brother to King Charles III, Andrew’s connection to Epstein has weighed heavily on the monarchy.
On Thursday, Feb. 19, at King Charles III’s privately owned Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, several unmarked police cars were seen coinciding with reports of Andrew’s arrest.
Andrew was arrested by the Thames Valley Police on his 66th birthday, and was charged with misconduct in public office. Where he is being held is presently not known, but the BBC reports he has been in custody for over eight hours.
A mugshot has not yet been released.
While the nature of the charge is not specific, The New York Times reports it is believed that authorities are investigating whether Andrew shared classified documents with Epstein.
His arrest follows the release by the U.S. Department of Justice of the storied Epstein files, which were made public through a series of releases which began on Dec. 19, 2025, and concluded on Feb. 3.
Within the documents released by the DOJ, which total to over 3.5 million pages, The New York Times cited an email from 2010 that allegedly finds Andrew forwarding Epstein documents about “an official trip to Asia, including Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China.”
King Charles III Responds To News Of Andrew’s Arrest
Responding on Feb. 19 to the news of his brother’s arrest, King Charles III said, “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.”
He added, “In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and cooperation.”
Concluding his statement, the king wrote:
Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.
According to the BBC, King Charles III was asked on Feb. 19 by reporters about the arrest of Andrew as he arrived at an event for London Fashion Week, but declined to offer further comment.
Notably, in Britain, misconduct in public office carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
