Craig Morgan is paying tribute to his late friend Toby Keith with a special new recording of one of country music’s most meaningful patriotic songs.
The country singer has released his version of “American Soldier,” with the personal blessing of Toby Keith’s family. The recording appears on Morgan’s new album, My Country, released on November 6.
The project celebrates America, country music, and the men and women who serve in the military. It arrives ahead of Veterans Day and as the United States prepares to mark its 250th anniversary.
Craig Morgan Received Toby Keith’s Family’s Blessing
Morgan revealed that Toby Keith’s widow, Tricia Lucus, and his children, Shelley, Krystal, and Stelen, personally supported his decision to record the song.
In a statement, Morgan said he felt privileged to have the family’s blessing to release his own version of the country legend’s iconic recording.
The decision carries special meaning because Morgan and Keith shared a close friendship. They also shared a deep respect for America and the military.
Morgan previously revealed that the two artists had discussed plans to tour together before Keith passed away in February 2024.
A Song That Holds Special Meaning for Both Artists
Toby Keith originally released “American Soldier” in 2003. The song became one of the most recognizable patriotic recordings in modern country music.
Its message about military service, sacrifice, family, and duty continues to resonate with listeners.
For Morgan, the song is especially personal because he also has a long military background.
Craig Morgan’s Military Service Inspired the Album
Morgan joined the United States Army in 1982 and served until 1997. His service included time with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions, as well as six years in the Army Reserve.
He also deployed during the United States invasion of Grenada in 1983.
In 2023, Morgan reenlisted in the Army Reserve during a ceremony held on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
His new album, My Country, contains 11 tracks, including collaborations with Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson.
The project brings together his love of country music, his patriotism, and his personal experiences serving his country.
With this tribute to Toby Keith, Craig Morgan is honoring both a close friend and a song that continues to hold a special place in the hearts of country music fans.
