Carrie Underwood’s Journey to Becoming an Opry Member

A longtime member of the Grand Ole Opry, Carrie Underwood was officially invited to join on March 15, 2008, in a moment orchestrated by none other than Randy Travis himself.

Three years after winning American Idol in 2005, Underwood stood on stage, unaware that her life was about to change again. As she performed, Randy Travis suddenly appeared behind her, causing the crowd to erupt in applause. Her stunned reaction quickly turned to tears when Travis revealed that he had been chosen to extend the invitation for her to become an official Opry member.

Playfully, she responded, “Let me think about it,” before tearfully accepting. The moment, forever etched in Opry history, was one of the most emotional surprises of her career.

A Full-Circle Tribute to Randy Travis

Seventeen years later, Carrie Underwood returned to the Opry 100 celebration, wearing a striking black dress—similar to the one she wore the night Randy Travis invited her to join the Opry. This time, the roles were reversed as she paid tribute to her longtime hero and friend.

Before singing, Underwood shared a heartfelt message about what Randy Travis has meant to her over the years:

“When I was a kid, my sister had a cassette tape of Randy Travis’s music. From the first time I heard his voice and those songs, I was hooked—and I knew my sister was not getting that tape back. The first time I met him many years later, I cried—embarrassing! But it was so emotional for me to meet this man whose voice I had been singing along with my whole life. I could never have imagined that I’d one day be recording songs with him, that he would become a dear friend, or that he would surprise me on stage and invite me to join the Grand Ole Opry back in 2008. It means so much to be here tonight, celebrating both the Opry and the amazing Randy Travis.”

She then performed two of his biggest hits, beginning with “Three Wooden Crosses.” The camera panned to the audience, showing many in tears—including Randy Travis’s wife, Mary Davis.

Next, she delivered an emotional rendition of “Forever and Ever, Amen.” Near the end of the song, Underwood walked toward the audience, holding the microphone out to Randy Travis, allowing him to sing the final “Amen”—a remarkable and moving moment, given the stroke he suffered years ago.

As she concluded the performance, the entire Grand Ole Opry erupted in a standing ovation, honoring both Underwood and the legendary Randy Travis.
