Team USA Dominates The 2026 Winter Olympics
The U.S. Olympic team won its 12th gold medal of the Winter Games on Sunday (February 22), setting a record for the country.
The 12th gold medal officially surpassed the previous mark established at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
30-year-old skier Breezy Johnson kicked off strong for Team USA, securing gold during the women’s downhill ski competition on February 8th. Her win came just moments after her teammate, Lindsey Vonn, crashed and had to be airlifted off the mountain.
The mixed team aerials squad, including Kaila Kuhn, Connor Curran and Christopher Lillis, also delivered a pivotal gold medal performance. Their win on February 21st helped Team USA push past its previous Winter Olympic gold-medal record.
Following their historic win, the men’s hockey team took home gold for the first time in 46 years. Team USA has only won two gold medals in men’s hockey, the first in 1960 and the second in 1980.

Team USA Goes For Gold!
Team USA’s strongest gold medal returns at these Winter Games came in four areas (Alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, figure skating and speedskating). Each discipline accounted for two gold medals, or roughly 18% of the overall total.
This year’s Olympic competition also looks very different from the one at the 2002 Winter Olympics. There were 38 more medal events on the schedule than there were in Salt Lake City.
Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, said the U.S. wasn’t focused on any one category, but rather aimed to excell at everything.
“We want to win in everything. We want to make every sport better. Some could argue there are countries that go a mile deep in certain sports and really dominate. Our goal has been to improve Winter sport across the board,” Hirshland said.

- U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey Team — Women’s Hockey
- Alysa Liu — Women’s Figure Skating
- Alex Ferreira — Men’s Ski Halfpipe (Freestyle Skiing)
