The Mysterious “McArthur” Project Was Revealed At The Beginning Of The Week
“When you pass on, what you gonna pass down?”
On Jan. 26, four major country artists shared a set of cryptic posts, offering no context or hints at the nature of the project that linked them all together.
The artists are Tim McGraw, Eric Church, HARDY, and Morgan Wallen. Any two of them working together would be noteworthy, but all four? Nothing short of incredible.
Fans first placed these four artists together when they recognized that all of them had shared similar posts bearing the name “McArthur.”
However, no context was given about what they were working on.
Was it a song? A concept album? A multi-media experience, like a long-form music video?
Nobody knew, but by Jan. 29, a sample of a song was shared on social media, featuring all four of the artists singing together. In the sliver of the dirge-like ballad they shared, their voices can be heard harmonizing as a percussive guitar and a distant fiddle guide them along.
With that sample, the promise that there would be more to learn “tonight” was also shared in the social media post’s caption…
And they delivered, with HARDY releasing the single “McArthur” on Friday, Jan. 30 — featuring Tim Mcgraw, Eric Church, and Morgan Wallen — which can be heard below.
Unraveling The “McArthur” Story
Lyrically, the sample of “McArthur” that was shared on Jan. 29 — the title of which was not initially made clear — revealed the multi-media storytelling that was being implemented by these artists.
Now, having the full song while looking back to the cryptic posts shared by each of the artists, a more complete portrait of their vision is shared.
With each of their mysterious posts, the surname McArthur was featured, with birthdays and days of death listed on each of them.
The spelling of the name McArthur, instead of “MacArthur” with an extra A, placed the project outside of history and decidedly in the realm of fiction.
Rather than the famed General Douglas MacArthur, of World War II; or even the late Pastor John MacArthur, whose MacArthur Study Bible remains an authoritative guide through Scripture, the name McArthur, with that spelling, is not one of great cultural or historical prominence.
Here is a breakdown of each of the Jan. 26 posts shared by the artists:
- Tim McGraw posted the name John McArthur, born Nov. 2, 1920, who died on Nov. 22, 1963;
- Eric Church posted the name Junior McArthur, born Sept. 2, 1945, who died on April 4, 1967;
- HARDY posted the name Jones McArthur, born June 5, 1968, who died on Jan. 5, 2025; and
- Morgan Wallen posted on his Instagram story the name Hunter McArthur, who was born May 13, 1993.
Notably, McGraw’s character, John, died the same day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated; Church’s character, Junior, was born on the day Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces in World War II; and HARDY’s character, Jones, was born the same day that Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated.
Further, Morgan Wallen’s character, Hunter, who is notably the only character who is still alive, shares birthdays with Wallen.
Hear The Song “McArthur”
“McArthur” was shared on HARDY’s YouTube page on Jan. 30, and it’s listed on streaming services with HARDY first, pointing to the possibility that this song may find itself released as part of a forthcoming HARDY project.
The song “McArthur” finds the four country artists singing from the perspective of their respective character, with each verse beginning with the artist introducing themselves as one of the McArthurs.
By the end of the song, the stories are all brought together by the following lyric:
“Sayin’ my bloodline it bled on this ground. Soon we all find that’s where we’re bound, and Father Time don’t leave anyone out. When you pass on, what you gonna pass down?”
