Kyle Kennedy, Granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, Dies at 42
Kyle Francis Kennedy, the granddaughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, has died at the age of 42.
News of her death became public this week, nearly one month after she passed away peacefully at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, on September 21, according to her family obituary. Her cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Kyle Kennedy Dedicated Her Life to Education
Born on July 6, 1984, Kyle Kennedy spent much of her life in Massachusetts and built a career focused on education.
She graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in history before earning master’s degrees in early education from Pace University and education policy and management from Harvard University.
Kennedy began her career with Teach For America, teaching in New York City public schools. She later worked on education reform and efforts to improve school curricula.
She Became An Advocate for Disability Rights
Kyle’s life changed dramatically in 2020 when she suffered a severe spinal cord injury that resulted in long-term paralysis and other medical challenges.
Despite the difficulties, she became an advocate for people living with disabilities.
She testified before the Massachusetts State House during a hearing concerning discrimination in health care for people with disabilities. Her family also remembered her for continuing to focus on her children and maintaining her determination through years of significant challenges.
Kyle Kennedy Was Also A Dedicated Runner
Kennedy was an accomplished long-distance runner.
In 2019, she completed the Boston Marathon in difficult weather conditions. According to her family, she finished the race 20 minutes faster than her father’s previous time.
Her father, Michael Kennedy, was the son of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy. He died in a skiing accident in Colorado on New Year’s Eve in 1997, when Kyle was just 13 years old.
A Family Marked by Loss
Kyle’s death adds another heartbreaking loss to the Kennedy family.
She also experienced the death of her infant daughter, Josephine “Josie,” who was Conor’s twin sister and died only days after birth. Her family said Kyle carried Josie’s memory with her throughout the rest of her life.
Kyle Kennedy is survived by her two sons, Conor and Declan, as well as her mother, Victoria, her siblings and extended family.
Funeral services were held privately.
She is remembered not only as a member of the Kennedy family, but as an educator, mother and advocate who dedicated much of her life to helping others.
