Tiger Woods Reaches Plea Deal in DUI Case, Driver’s License Suspended for 5 Years
Tiger Woods faced a major legal development Wednesday after appearing in a Florida courtroom over the rollover crash that led to his DUI arrest earlier this year.
The 50-year-old golf legend reached a plea agreement that reduced the original DUI charge to reckless driving. Woods also entered a no-contest plea related to refusing to submit to a lawful test.
As part of the agreement, his driver’s license will be suspended for five years.
Tiger Woods Appears in Court
Woods appeared at the Martin County Courthouse in Stuart, Florida, on Wednesday, September 2.
He arrived with his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, and remained mostly quiet during the proceedings. He later left the courthouse without speaking to reporters.
The hearing came months after Woods initially pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the March crash near his Jupiter Island home.
According to court records and authorities, Woods’ Land Rover clipped a truck and rolled over during the incident.
DUI Charge Reduced
Woods was originally facing a DUI charge involving property damage, along with a charge for refusing to submit to a lawful test.
Under the plea agreement, the DUI charge was reduced to reckless driving, second offense. The other charge was handled as a careless-driving citation.
Woods entered a no-contest plea to the reckless-driving charge. A no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but the defendant accepts the consequences of the case.
Five-Year Driving Suspension
The biggest consequence for Woods is the suspension of his driver’s license.
The judge ordered a five-year suspension, with the penalties running concurrently. Woods was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, according to TMZ and other reports.
The judge made it clear that Woods cannot simply drive when necessary.
He was warned that driving while his license is suspended could result in him being sent back to jail.
What Happened in March?
The case began after a rollover crash on Jupiter Island in March.
Authorities said Woods’ SUV struck a truck and overturned. No one was seriously injured.
According to investigators, Woods showed signs that raised concerns about impairment. He took a breath test that showed no alcohol, but authorities said he refused to provide a urine sample. Deputies also reported finding two hydrocodone pills in his possession.
Woods later announced that he was stepping away from golf to seek treatment.
The latest court decision brings the criminal case to a major turning point, while Woods now faces a five-year period without a driver’s license.
