3 Confirmed Dead In Tennessee After Harsh Winter Storm, National Death Toll Continues To Rise

Multiple Deaths Reported In Tennessee In Wake Of Destructive Winter Storm

Sadly, multiple deaths have been reported in Tennessee following the harsh winter storm that tore through the U.S. over the weekend.

Action 5 News out of Memphis reported on Sunday (January 25) that several weather-related fatalities have been confirmed in Tennessee. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) confirmed three deaths, which were reported in Crockett, Haywood, and Obion counties.

The Haywood County Sheriff, Billy Garrett, spoke about the fatality in his county. A 66-year-old man from Brownsville died after suffering a heart attack while shoveling snow.

Additionally, Action 5 News spoke with the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office about the death in their county, who said an 11-year-old child died of undisclosed causes.

Details about the death in Obion County remain unknown.

The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office shared the news of a fourth death following the winter storm in Tennessee. There, a man died in a car crash in the city of Dyersburg. Although Action 5 News attributes this man’s death to the winter storm, other outlets say his death has not officially been ruled as weather-related.

The winter storm hit Tennessee (and Nashville) especially hard. The state, which is not used to winter weather of this magnitude, remains under a Level 3 State of Emergency as of approximately 11:50 AM CT.

By January 25, over 300,000 people in Tennessee were left without power, according to The TennesseanNashville news outlet WSMV reports that over 223,000 of those outages were in Davidson County (Nashville’s county).

People without heat can visit warming stations at the Nashville Fairgrounds, Madison County Community Center, and Southeast Regional Community Center. The Nashville Fire Department’s various stations, the Nashville Fire Training Academy, and the Metro Nashville Police Department precincts, except for the central and east precincts, all have warming stations as well.

National Death Toll Rises After Harsh Winter Storm Plows Through The U.S.

The four fatalities reported in Tennessee come as the national death toll continues to rise after the winter storm.

A live article from ABC News, last updated around 11:30 AM CT, reports 21 confirmed deaths so far.
