Hayden Panettiere’s Cause of Death Revealed, Coroner Rules It an Accident
The cause of Hayden Panettiere’s death has been officially confirmed.
According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, the actress died from the toxic effects of fentanyl and several other substances. Her death was ruled an accident.
Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. She was found unresponsive inside a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, where she had been temporarily staying.
Coroner Confirms Cause of Death
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office identified the substances involved as fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine.
Alprazolam is commonly known by the brand name Xanax. Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant, while quetiapine is a prescription medication often used to treat certain mental health conditions.
The coroner’s office classified the manner of death as accidental.
An autopsy was completed after Panettiere’s death. Officials previously confirmed that no signs of trauma were found that contributed to her death.
Hayden Panettiere Was Found Unresponsive
Emergency responders were called to the Greenville residence on August 16 after receiving a report of cardiac arrest.
First responders found Panettiere unresponsive and attempted advanced life-saving measures. However, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead that afternoon.
Her death initially remained under investigation while officials waited for toxicology results and other medical findings.
The Greenville City Police Department and the coroner’s office were involved in the investigation. Authorities previously said there were no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
A Career Spanning Film and Television
Panettiere began working in entertainment as a child. She appeared in television productions before earning early recognition for roles in films such as “Remember the Titans” and “Raising Helen.”
She later became widely known for playing Claire Bennet on the NBC series “Heroes.”
Panettiere also starred as Juliette Barnes on the country music drama “Nashville,” a role that earned her two Golden Globe nominations.
Her other credits included “Bring It On: All or Nothing,” “Ice Princess,” “Scream 4” and “Scream VI.”
Her Family Continues to Mourn
Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.
Following the actress’s death, her loved ones asked the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to continue.
The official ruling now confirms that her death was accidental.
