“I was about to jump in.”
A flood survivor named Julia Hatfield recently shared her harrowing tale on ABC News.
The devastating flood swept through Kerr County in Texas over the 4th of July weekend. The flood waters came with little to no warning and have taken 120 lives, with over 160 people still missing. The community and the government has been falling to try and find every missing person and give families closure.
Amidst all this devastation and heartbreak, a story has emerged with a glimmer of hope.
An RV park was hit with the massive flooding, and although all 33 RVs were swept away and many in the park perished, one boy survived against all odds.
Julia was living in the RV park with her husband when the floodwaters rushed through. The newlywed couple managed to escape to safety.
While they were safe, Julia heard someone screaming. When she investigated the sound, she saw a young boy floating away in the flood.
She said,
“I looked up and witnessed him floating downstream after being caught in the waters.” Julia felt helpless. “I was about to jump in and my husband had to hold me back. He said, you’re gonna go in and there’s nothing you can do if you jump in. I didn’t know how I was gonna live with that.”
As she was struggling with the traumatizing event, a friend called her and let her know that a boy meeting the description of the boy she had seen was found alive.
“Thankfully, by the end of the day yesterday, I saw his face. And he had been rescued.”
Julia shared that she had a gut feeling that the boy who was found was the one she had seen, and she hopes to reconnect with him to make sure he is okay.
Although this is still a catastrophic event, many have suffered an unthinkable tragedy.

She Shared Her Firsthand Account Of The Day
Through tears, Julia shared her firsthand account of that day.
Julia’s newlywed husband had stayed awake that night as a precaution due to the storm. The young survivor shared that without him doing that, it could have been a different story.
“Well, my husband had stayed awake. The rain was coming down really hard. And so he was making sure we didn’t have any leaks in our RV. And he started to hear screaming. And he looked out and saw that the lower level of the park was, that’s about four feet lower than us. The RVs were already flooded, they had water up to the doors. And he woke me up immediately. And if he hadn’t been there, it could have been a very different story.”
She shared that she was not sure what to do in that moment, as everything was happening too fast.
A lot of people were in denial about what was happening because it was just happening so fast, a little too fast a process.
