Firefighter’s Morgan Wallen Blind Audition Ends With Marriage Proposal Instead of a Chair Turn
Sometimes, winning is not about the chairs turning and instead, it is about the moment that makes the whole room stop.
When Jacob Ryan Gustafson, a 35-year-old firefighter from Yucaipa, California, walked onto The Voice stage on September 23, he carried more than just his guitar. He carried a plan. His audition song was Morgan Wallen’s “Spin You Around,” which served as a nod to the artist who also once stood on that very stage chasing a dream. For Jacob, the song was personal because he told producers beforehand that when he hears it, he thinks of his girlfriend Jennifer and how he wants to spin her around for the rest of his life.
The performance was heartfelt, steady, and filled with sincerity. Yet none of the four coaches, Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg, Niall Horan, and Michael Bublé, turned their chairs. Niall later admitted that he regretted it and said, “I’ve gotta be honest with you, bro. I was so close. If I could press it now, I would, but I’m so sorry, dude.”
For many contestants, that moment would sting. For Jacob, it was only the setup for something bigger. With the lights still hot and the audience still clapping, he asked the coaches if he could bring someone on stage. Reba gave the nod, and Jacob waved Jennifer up. “She is the reason why I’m here,” he told them.
Then came the twist no one saw coming. Standing beside Jennifer, Jacob said, “This life is a beautiful life, and I’m so blessed. Even right now, if I could change anything, the only thing I’d change is your last name.” Jennifer’s eyes filled with tears as Jacob reached into his pocket, pulled out a ring, and dropped to one knee. “Will you marry me?” he asked. The crowd roared while Snoop shouted, “Go ahead, Jacob! Go ahead, Jacob!”.
Jennifer said yes through her tears, and the coaches bolted from their chairs to surround the couple. Michael Bublé summed it up perfectly when he said, “Okay, so you won The Voice! Jacob shows you that there are no losers on The Voice. What a beautiful moment”. Snoop took it further by not only praising Jacob’s courage as a firefighter but also hinting he might want to work with him musically. Even Reba, who had not turned her chair minutes before, was glowing as she congratulated them.

What made the moment even more powerful was the backstory. Jacob works grueling 48-hour shifts with the Loma Linda Fire Department and risks his life every day. He and Jennifer share a blended family of six children. He admitted before the audition that it took him 20 years to find the confidence to get on stage and that it was Jennifer’s belief in him that made him believe in himself. He explained that when she was proud, that was the only win that mattered. And now he had just made her the centerpiece of the most unforgettable audition of the season.
The story did not end on the stage either. The proposal went viral within hours, and Jacob released a new single titled “If I Could Change Anything,” which was directly inspired by the words he spoke to Jennifer that night. What began as a blind audition that looked like a loss ended up being the biggest win of all.
So maybe Jacob did not walk away with a chair turn, but he walked away with a fiancée, a viral moment, and a brand-new chapter in his life. And as Bublé said, when the one person you wanted most says yes, that is the only victory that matters.
