Darius Rucker Sentenced On 2023 Drug Charges
Darius Rucker Was Sentenced In A Williamson County Courtroom On Drug Charges
On February 19, 2023, Darius Rucker was pulled over for a simple traffic violation in Franklin, Tennessee. The cop stopped Rucker on Murfreesboro Road and, during the traffic stop, stated that he could smell marijuana. When asked, the singer said that he had “smoked weed in the vehicle,” but not that day.
The cops searched the vehicle and found 14 unlabeled, gray, and purple pills and a THC pen, which read “88.5% THC.” Rucker claimed he did not know what the pills were because his girlfriend had given them to him. Upon further investigation, the police found that the pills contained psilocybin, which is a psychedelic and a Schedule I controlled substance.
Darius Rucker’s Sentencing
On Tuesday, September 10th, 2024, Rucker entered the courtroom looking forlorn. He pleaded no contest to a charge of simple possession of a controlled substance. A no-contest plea is neither a guilty plea nor an innocence plea. It is a way of not admitting fault while still accepting the consequences.
However, the court treats a no-contest plea as a guilty plea, and Darius was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days of probation.
Darius spoke about the traffic stop and further investigation prior to his sentencing on the TODAY show back in May. Watch what he had to say then:
Darius Rucker’s Response To His Sentencing
Rucker refused to address the media but his lawyers did release a statement on his behalf that read:
“On behalf of Darius, we want to thank the Honorable Judge Tom Taylor, and the District Attorney’s office for the time and care taken in considering the details of this case and its final disposition. In addition, we want to thank and commend the members of the Franklin Police Department and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department for the respectful and professional manner in which they treated Darius during the process. Darius looks forward to working through this probationary period and putting this all behind him.”
