Halle Berry Explains Why Never Let Go Convinced Her to Return to Horror

Never Let Go star Halle Berry reveals the most intriguing aspect of the upcoming film that convinced her to return to the horror genre.

What Is Never Let Go About?

A survival horror produced by Deadpool & Wolverine and Stranger Things director Shawn Levy, Never Let Go chronicles the story of Berry’s central character, a mother with schizophrenia who struggles with dark secrets from her past. Living with her two sons, Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Sam (Anthony B. Jenkins), in an abandoned and worn-down house in the middle of a forest, Berry’s Momma is haunted by an evil entity trying to take over the world. To stave off Evil (Stephanie Lavigne), Momma and her sons must stay connected at all times, tethered by ropes. However, when one of the boys questions the presence of Evil, their ties break, leading to a harrowing and desperate fight for survival.

Berry, who went to great lengths to commit to the role, was widely praised for her performance in Never Let Go. However, said showing from the Hollywood legend wasn’t enough to convince critics, with the film earning a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, largely due to alleged storytelling inconsistencies. Never Let Go also didn’t hold much interest at the box office, barely recouping its $20 million budget.

During the promotional tour for Never Let Go, Berry suggested the film could morph into a franchise, believing there is a greater story to tell regarding her character. The film was a rare foray into the horror genre for Berry, whose most notable feature in it was her 2003 effort, Gothika.
