Does “Idol” Contestant Thunderstorm Artis Look Familiar? There’s A Reason Why…

Season 23 Of American Idol Premiered On Sunday, March 9
If you tuned in to the Season 23 premiere of American Idol and thought you recognized hopeful contestant Thunderstorm Artis, there’s a good reason why.
American Idol‘s 23rd season premiered on Sunday, March 9. Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie returned as judges for the eighth year. Following longtime judge Katy Perry’s departure, Idol enlisted Carrie Underwood to fill her empty chair.

Being an Idol judge is a full-circle moment for Underwood, as she won the show’s fourth season in 2005.

Some sneak peeks released before Idol‘s new season started showed that Underwood is a compassionate and emotional judge. We’ve seen several clips of her crying in the audition room after being moved by a contestant’s performance.

We finally got to see Underwood fully in action as a judge when Season 23 officially started on March 9. We also got the chance to see a familiar face in the audition room.

Thunderstorm Artis was one of the contestants featured on the Season 23 premiere of American Idol. He was 28 when he auditioned but has since turned 29.

The singer charmed the Idol judges with an original song titled “Don’t Let Me Let You Go.” The track was inspired by his relationship with his wife, Faith.

There’s a point in this competition where we’re looking for people who stand out, and man, you jumped all the way out,” said Lionel Richie after Artis finished singing.

Underwood agreed, saying:

The song was so good. It was beautiful, relatable,” Underwood said. “We’ve all been there. I’ve been married 14 years, don’t let anybody go. It’s beautiful. Well done. Thank you.”

All three judges voted to give Artis a Golden Ticket to Hollywood!

Thunderstorm Artis’ History On The Voice

Many of you may recognize Artis…and that’s because he previously competed on The Voice!

Artis auditioned for Season 18 of The Voice in 2020. He got all four coaches (Blake Shelton, John Legend, Nick Jonas, and Kelly Clarkson) to turn their chairs for his blind audition performance.

Artis originally chose Legend as his coach but was later stolen by Jonas. Throughout his time on the show, Artis wowed with covers of songs such as Rihanna’s “Stay” and Michael Bublé’s “Home.”

Jonas helped coach Artis all the way to the finale. He ended up finishing in third place behind runner-up Toneisha Harris and winner Todd Tilghman, both from Team Blake.

Artis has continued to refine his talent in the five years that have passed since his run on The Voice. He and his wife, Faith, have also welcomed two sons.
