Lorrie Morgan was married to Keith Whitley at the time of his passing on May 9, 1989 at the age of 34. In the years since his passing, Morgan has made it her mission to keep his legacy alive.

So it meant the world to Morgan when Whitley was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame earlier this year. During the medallion ceremony, Morgan said Whitley, “never would have expected” he’d be a CMHOF inductee.

Whitley’s songs continue to resonate with those who listen to them. A large audience recently got the chance to hear one of his greatest songs thanks to a newly emerging country artist.

Bryce Leatherwood performed Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” during night one of the Season 22 finale of The Voice. His heartfelt cover struck a chord with listeners, including Morgan.

Morgan gushed about Leatherwood’s performance in a post on Facebook:
“Did you see the The Voice finals last night?” Morgan wrote. “Bryce Leatherwood Music on Team Blake Shelton sang ‘Don’t Close Your Eyes’. Bryce did such a great job and I think he deserves to win for this performance alone! I’ll bet Keith is smiling down! Brought tears to my eyes!“

Voice viewers also loved Leatherwood’s performance. People voted for him in droves…so much so that he ended up winning the show!

Leatherwood’s coach, Blake Shelton, celebrated his win, saying:

“YOUR SEASON 22 @nbcthevoice WINNER EVERYBODY!!!! BRYCE LEATHERWOOD!!!! I’m such a proud coach.. @bryceleatherwood, you are so d— deserving of this. Thank you America and GET READY WORLD!!!”
